About

The Hill Library, located just past the intersection of Roller Coaster Road and Route 202A, offers books, multimedia, a rich collection of local history, a meeting place, and clubs for Strafford residents.

The leadership of the Hill Library is comprised of committed staff and a Board of Trustees. The Hill Library offers free library cards to Strafford residents.

History

Books and literacy have always been valued in Strafford.  Early impetus to learning was the need to understand scriptural materials.  Beyond this the town has a tradition of providing texts and general reading placed in schools for wide availability.

The 1893 town meeting saw funding of the Strafford Public Library. The First librarian was Hiram Hill, who was also town auditor, school board member, mortician and funeral director.  The library collection traveled from Hill’s home to other lending points in town—the library later centralized in homes of other librarians and later relocated to Austin-Cate Academy.

In 1965 Eleanor Smith gathered remaining books to a room at Austin Hall and began keeping evening lights on—her actions stimulated library interest and soon citizens supported Bernice and Gordon Hill’s offer of land and gift money for the present library site.  In 1999 Herb and Anne Cilley donated the last wing and made the Hill Library what we know today.
